SheTrades Rwanda Launch

22 – 23 MARCH 2017 AT KIGALI CONVENTION CENTRE

The case for the economic empowerment of women as a crucial driver of development and sustainable economic growth is unquestionable. On 1 September 2015, the International Trade Centre (ITC) launched the SheTrades initiative to coincide with the adoption of the Global Goals for Sustainable Development. Developed through extensive consultations with a diverse group of stakeholders, SheTrades is a wide-ranging initiative to empower women economically through greater integration in global trade and investment, with a goal to connect one million women to markets by 2020.

Women own close to 10 million of the world’s small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), but this figure only accounts for one third of the total number of SMEs globally. There are major obstacles that must be overcome in order to foster a greater number of successful women entrepreneurs. These obstacles include inequalities in terms of access to markets, education and training, financial services and entrepreneurship opportunities.

ITC and the Ministry of Trade, Industry and East African Community Affairs (MINEACOM) are joining efforts to support women entrepreneurs under the SheTrades initiative in Rwanda. The programme will bring together partners from government, academia, financial services, and the private sector to commit to actions that foster entrepreneurship of women and support them to overcome these challenges to grow their businesses and access global markets.

As part of the SheTrades Rwanda Launch, there will be a special focus on the Mitreeki East Africa – India Partnership. Mitreeki is an initiative that aims to contribute to the goal of SheTrades by fostering women entrepreneurs in East Africa through knowledge exchange regionally and with India. Mitreeki will participate in and host sessions at the SheTrades Rwanda launch.

Objectives of the event

The event is an engagement opportunity for high-level delegates to learn more about SheTrades and explore opportunities to leverage this global initiative to achieve the shared goal of economically empowering women. Further, this will be an opportunity for women entrepreneurs to meet with policymakers and discuss some of their challenges such as access to finance, education, training and global markets. Finally, the event will provide a platform for women entrepreneurs from across East Africa and India to exchange knowledge, network and further develop their business relationships.

Women Vendors Exhibition and Forum

Women Vendors Exhibition and Forum

The International Trade Centre (ITC) and the Women Entrepreneurs Association of Turkey (KAGIDER) are pleased to announce that the Women Vendors Exhibition and Forum (WVEF Istanbul) will take place on 23 and 24 February 2017 at the Hilton Istanbul Bomonti Hotel. 700 company profiles have already been pre-screened and 450 companies selected to participate in the event, and new applications are being accepted through to 12 December 2016.
WVEF is the premier global event for women entrepreneurs to learn, to do business and to create lifetime opportunities to grow and internationalise their businesses. At previous events held in Brazil, Rwanda, Mexico and China, ITC facilitated thousands of business to business (B2B) meetings, catalysed more than US $ 50 million worth of commercial transaction agreements and mobilised partners to establish women’s economic empowerment initiatives across the world in support of the SheTrades initiative to connect one million women to market by 2020; click here for insights into the WVEF experience!

ITC and KAGIDER will continue to work with local and international partners to ensure that the WVEF Istanbul edition makes a demonstrated contribution to the economic empowerment of women through trade. In addition to the capacity building and business to business meetings that women entrepreneurs have traditionally benefitted from through WVEF, this year’s event will include a focus on investment and innovation.
